Mark and Karen moved here in July 2003 to ‘retire’ from working as Technical consultants within the Telecoms industry.
Why Italy?
Location, location, location! Well being honest we like Italy, its got great wine and that is an excellent reason.
No seriously, Karen was born near Glasgow in Scotland, into a Scottish/Italian family and Mark is English, as we had both lived and worked in Scotland and England, Italy seemed to be a home from home, well at least for one of us. Okay, we wanted to leave England because it was getting a bit busy and well, Scotland is just too cold, plus we had a great opportunity to buy in Italy.
La Granica, is situated a couple of minutes drive outside the ancient village of Fontanile in a small-secluded valley at the heart of the ‘Strada del Vino’in the Monferatto. La Granica is also our home, we live on site at the hotel, so if you have any problems or want to tell us anything, please feel free to approach us.
Grapes & Wine
We took over the vineyards around La Granica in July 2003 and found to our dismay that the vineyards had problems, like a lot of vineyards in this area at the time. We are now happy to say we are well on our way to producing not only high quality grapes but small amounts of good wine which is part of a phased development to produce wines on a small commercial basis. We hope we can only get better. We are classed under the status of ‘eco friendly’ so we are getting there! At the moment we sell our grapes to the local cantina in Fontanile.
